Alhaji Tofic pays tribute to fmr GBA Vice Pres Ahene-Truly

Boxing fans and officials as well as sports aficionados will gather on Saturday, October 8 to pay their last respect to a former Vice President of the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA), Mr Jonas Nii Ahene-Truly.

He died at the age of 68.

Nii Ahene-Truly, was a Vice President of the Ghana Boxing Authority under the tenure of Mr Samir Captan’s presidency.

Paying a glowing tribute to Ahene-Truly’s memory, The Head of Promotions of the GBA, Alhaji Tofic Muritala told the Times Sports, yesterday, that Mr Truly’s death was a big blow to the sports industry.

“I understand he’s been unwell for some time but we hoped he would recover to witness some of the seeds we planted together bear fruits but he’s no more.”

He said the deceased, who worked as the Director of Sports for Metro TV in the station’s formative years, participated in sports at all levels and worked with different group to develop and promote the industry.

“Ahene-Truly became an Assembly Member for the Osu area and joined the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) and performed several functions towards sports promotion,” he said.

As a boxing promoter, Alhaji Tofic described the former GBA Vice President as a hardworking fellow who was very honest and truthful, always ready to step on toes to ensure the right thing was done.

“He worked satisfactorily with Azumah Nelson’s protocol team. He also played major roles in the development of a number of boxers including Ike Quartey, a former World Boxing Association (WBA) champion, Joshua Clottey, also an International Boxing Federation (IBF) champion and many others.

Ahene-Truly’s funeral service is scheduled for October 8 in Osu (Behind the Oxford Street branch of Ecobank)and burial at the Osu Cemetery.
