Afia Schwarzenegger fined GH¢60,000 for contempt of court

A social media celebrity, Valentina Nana Agyeiwaa, also known as Afia Schwarzenegger, was yesterday fined GH¢60,000 by the Tema High Court in a contempt case pending before the court.

The court additionally imposed GH¢5,000 fine on the social media celebrity, to be paid to the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, Mr Benard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, for defamatory comments against him.

The court further ordered Afia Schwarzenegger, to sign a bond of good behaviour for 36 months and was also ordered not to make any pronouncements or comment on the case during the bond period.

Any breach of the orders would result in her appearance before court.

Afia Schwarzenegger was sentenced t`o a 10-day-jail term on December 1, 2022, for refusing to appear before court after Mr Boasiako sued her for contempt.

On Tuesday December 20, 2022, she made an appearance in the company of her lawyer, Mr Adrian Duke Amaning, who moved a motion on notice for variation of the sentence.

In consonance with Order 50 Rule 4(1) and Rule 5 of the High Court Rules, which deals with suspension of an order and discharge of a person committed, Mr Amaning, prayed the court to suspend the sentence.

Mr Amaning indicated that his client had shown remorse and had since published her apology to the court. Afia Schwarzenegger pleaded that she could not serve the jail term because of ill-health.
