The Accra West Region of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) recorded a revenue of GHC 3.9 million at the end of October this year.
The revenue realised were from fees collected from customers engaged in illegal connections and those who owe the company.
The Regional Revenue Protection Manager of Accra West Region ECG, Dr Mark Owusu Ansah, disclosed this during a mass revenue mobilisation and disconnection exercise in Accra on Friday.
The exercise formed part of their monthly routine exercise dubbed ‘Campaign against Power Theft’ to unearth illegalities and improve revenue collection.
It was carried out within the eight districts of the Accra West Region namely; Ablekuma, Bortianor, Achimota, Dansoman, Korle-Bu, Nsawam, Kaneshie and Amasaman.
He said the illegal connections affected the finances of the company and posed a threat revenue generation efforts of the company.
Dr Ansah expressed optimism that, the initiative by management would help the company retrieve debts owed by customers to enable it to enhance its operations.
“This is the second exercise we have embarked and today we’ve intensified our operations and are expecting more revenue than last month. Offenders identified in last month’s exercise had been dealt with and we believe this initiative will yield positive result because the company is encountering huge commercial losses as a result of some customers’ behaviour and attitude through power theft,” he added.
Dr Ansah urged customers to desist from any form of illegalities to prevent abnormalities.
He also encouraged the public to assist the company with information if they detected such illegalities in their communities to enable it to take action.
The District Manager for Kaneshie, Mr Dominic Afesi, explained that, illegalities by customers apart from denying them their revenue accounting from purchases made from suppliers, it also affected their equipment’s such as transformers among others.
He said it also affected the quality of supply to customers and posed dangers to the public in cases where the illegalities were not well done.
Mr Afesi directed that customers report to any ECG office if they needed assistance to ensure sanity among them and the company.
