Accra Panthers defeat Nungua Tigers in Rugby League

Accra Panthers Rugby League Football Club recorded their second win of the league campaign with a 14-6 victory over Nungua Tigers in their week-four game played at Legon Ajax Park on Sunday.

In a tightly-contested game, the Panthers got off to a flying start, scoring the only try of the first half and converting successfully to take a 6-0 lead by the first quarter of the game.

The Tigers did all they could to get on the score sheet, but their efforts left much to be desired as they went into the break on the losing side.

Back from recess, the Tigers came out all guns blazing and immediately got the needed response to their opponents’ first half form with a successful try and conversion to level the score at 6-6.

However, their mojo dimmed midway through the half and the Panthers took advantage of that to score two quick tries to raise the score to 14-6.

The Tigers made some substitutions in a bid to mount a comeback, but the Panthers’ defence stood resolute to hold onto the scoreline.

Although they lost, the Nungua Tigers still claimed top spot with six points ahead of the Accra Panthers, albeit on goal difference.

In the second game of the day, the Skolars emerged victorious with a 16-12 win over the Bears.

It was the Bears who broke the deadlock in the seventh minute through a try from Osman Alhassan, with Andrews Welbeck successfully converting in the eighth minute. However, they surrendered the lead when Skolars’ Emmanuel Avumatsodo scored a try on the 35th minute mark, before Elvis Ayertey scored a hat-trick of tries in the 49th, 57th, and 79th minutes to stretch the lead.

The Bears fought back with Francis Lawson adding another try in the 66th minute and Andrew Welbeck converting in the 67th minute to reduce the gap to two.

The results leave the Skolars in fourth place on six points, with the Accra Bears languishing at the bottom of the log with no point.
