The Accra Golden Lions Club over the weekend presented hampers worth GH¢12,000 to residents of Awutu Mfadwen in the Awutu Senya West District as part of their effort to fight hunger in underprivileged communities.
The community made up of about 50 households each received a hamper filled with rice, cooking oil, oat, spaghetti, tomatoes, sardines, drinks and biscuits as well as hot meal packed for the kids.
The President of the Club, Mr Henry Appiah said the move was in fulfillment of their corporate social responsibility to support less privileged in society.
He said the donation was centred on Hunger, which was one of the five global causes of the Lions Clubs International.
The other global causes which the club centred its activities on, he said were Vision, Environment, Diabetes and Childhood Cancer.
“Lions Clubs around the world organise activities on these five thematic areas; however, their activities are not only focused on these five global causes. Lions Clubs undertake other activities affecting their communities,” Mr Appiah added.
He called on other organisations to support less privileged communities in order to bring development to them since the government could not do it alone.
The Polling Station Executive Officer at Mfadwen Electoral Area, Mr Frank Osei commended Accra Golden Lions Club for the gesture saying “the move has been a blessing and put smiles on the faces of the old and the young ones.”
He said the community mainly farmers made up of about 800 populations were lacking behind a lot of social amenities such as water, extension of electricity, clinics, durbar grounds, market center, and recreational places for kids to play.
“The standard of living here is very low and we don’t actually meet the three square meals in a day, because usually we go to farm, eat in the farm and comes home to sleep,” he added.
He called on government and other benevolence to come to their aid to better the lives of the individual in the community.
The Chief of the Community, Nenyi Kwame Mensah Acheampong in a speech on his behalf said the only CHPS Compound for the community do not have doctor and the only nurse who serves the whole community also comes, once every week.
He said this had made life unbearable for the sick especially pregnant women and appealed to government and the Member of Parliament of the area to assist them with doctors and nurses since their lives were in danger.
Madam Grace Annan, a beneficiary who is widowed with six children thanked Accra Golden Lions Club for the support and putting smiles on their faces.
