The Goaso Diocesan Bishop of the Methodist Church Ghana, Rt Rev. Christopher Kwesi Dadson, has said that accounting to the proceeds of the Electronic transaction levy (E – Levy) was the surest way to build trust among the citizenry.
Rt Rev. Dadson appealed to President Akufo – Addo to inform Ghanaians on the total amount realised and the corresponding expenditure of the levy which was expected to commence on 1st May this year at an agreed time frame.
The Bishop was addressing the opening session of the 7th Annual Synod of the diocese on Friday at Akrodie in the Ahafo region under the theme “Discipleship: Living a transformed life in Jesus Christ “.
He noted that the synod was the highest decision-making body of the church at the diocesan level, where ministers and lay members took stock of the previous year and plan towards the year ahead.
Rt Rev. Dadson was optimistic that when resources are properly accounted for, they will give the government an impetus to introduce other levies without the residents’ resistance to them.
“All the roads in Ahafo Region are in a deplorable state which need to be fixed soon. We have developmental and infrastructure deficit, and high rate of unemployment in our area,” he observed.
“If some of the proceeds of the E – levy will be used to fix Ahafo roads and other developmental projects, residents of the region will be willing to pay more than the GHc1.5,” he stated.
The Bishop implored the citizenry to accept the E – levy and see it as a tool to build the country together, saying that the task was on President Akufo – Addo to fix the country.
Rt Rev. Dadson admonished residents of Ahafo Region to take issues of health and hygiene seriously though the restrictions and protocols on COVID -19 had been eased by the state.
The Bishop said the diocese in the years to come would plant seven new churches, eliminate churches under trees and in classrooms and hold the Bishop’s breakfast meeting for organisational executives among others.
He thanked Mrs Mabel Bosomki for building a cathedral for Fawohoyeden society, which would be used as a retreat centre for the diocese. He again expressed appreciation to Nananom, Ministers and the laity for their contribution to the growth of the Goaso diocese.
The Diocesan Lay Chairman, Bro Thomas Oppong, indicated that the diocese would use technological tools, including zoom to hold some of their meetings, adding that ” let us serve the church “.
