Absence of polling station executives bedeviling CPP fortunes – Sarpong-Kumankumah

The Convention People’s Party (CPP) has identified absence of polling station executives to run the affairs of the party on the ground to mobilise the grassroots as having bedevilled fortunes over the years.

It has taken an initiative to mobilise some members, supporters and sympathisers of the party to train them to develop interest in become polling station executives to be vigilant and focused at polling stations at future general elections.

In furtherance of this, the CPP is to use technology to organise its polling station elections for the first time since 1992 to reverse the dwindling fortunes of the party in future elections.

Besides, at the commemoration of the party’s 73rd anniversary in Accra, it launched a short code (*920*277#) to make it easy for interested citizens to become members, supporters, sympathisers, well-wishers and faithful of the CPP using mobile phones.

Interested applicants will only be required to enter their names and voter identification numbers to qualify as new members of the CPP on a campaign dubbed: ‘Operation Takeover’ which seeks to mobilise a minimum of 5 million Ghanaians for action ahead of the 2024 general election.

Nana Akosua Sarpong-Kumankumah, National Chairperson of the CPP, revealed that more than 800,000 positions were vacant at the polling station level although the party had offices across the country, unfortunately it did not have people to man them, hence the campaign.

She attributed the situation to the dwindling fortunes of the party in past elections and was hopeful to have the trend reversed in future elections and assured of the leadership of the party’s determination, dedication and commitment to organise its polling station elections this year in accordance with its constitution and in compliance with directive issued by its Council of Elders.

“We do not have our people at the polling stations to mobilise voters for us, we must find the people at the polling stations and the campaign we have launched is the magic for CPP to reverse our dwindling electoral fortunes.

“We need 17 executives for the various positions at the polling station level, there are 40,000 polling stations and 6,200 electoral areas, in total, we are looking at 8,000 executives, if we have these numbers working for the party on the ground, it will create magic.

“The youth should express interest in politics, the surest way to transform the country and create opportunities for them is through political power since they play leading roles in the struggle for our independence, and the CPP is open to offer them the platform to make changes in the country’s progress, growth and development paradigm,” Nana Sarpong-Kumankumah alluded. -GNA
