Some seven Western Togoland Restoration Front members have been granted a GH400,000 bail each with two sureties to be justified, by the Criminal Division of the Accra High Court, presided over by Justice El-Freda Dankyi.
They are Ernest Dzitor, Samuel Yao Fiagbedzi, Richard Doglo Ametepe, Prosper Avumenyi, Benjamin Kplevi, Isaac Kwesi Afeku and Richard Dzri, also known as (alias) Mumuni.
They have all pleaded not guilty to participating in activities of the prohibited group, and the case has been adjourned to November 25, 2021.
A couple of weeks ago, the leader of another group, Homeland Study Group Foundation (HSGF), that has been agitating for the secession of Western Togoland, Mr Charles Kormi Kudjordji, 87, alias Papavi Hogbedetor, was reported dead on Friday, 15 October 2021, at a hospital in the Volta Region.
He unsuccessfully declared independence for ‘Western Togoland’ and went into hiding until his death.
Mr Kudjordji had been leading an insurgency, demanding the secession of the erstwhile Western Togoland, which covers modern day Oti and Volta regions as well as some parts of the North-East Region, from Ghana.
He and eight others were first arrested in May 2019 after they claimed time was due, per an agreement with the government of Dr Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah, to declare Western Togoland independent from Ghana.
They were charged with treason, among others, but the state later dropped the charges.
But an insurgency on Friday, September 25, 2020, which saw roadblocks to the Volta Region and attacks on government installations, led to their re-arrest.
