Six hundred police personnel are to be deployed to Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency in Accra on Thursday to ensure law and order during the by-election to choose a new Member of Parliament for the area.

The Accra Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Partick Adusei Sarpong, told the Ghanaian Times in Accra yesterday stating that the police were ready for the upcoming election.

Some of the areas in the constituency are Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration, University of Ghana, Legon, Dzorwulu, Okponglo, East Legon and Shiashie.

He said no motorbikes would be allowed by the police in the 137 polling stations and six electoral areas during the exercise.

DCOP Sarpong said there would be both police vehicles and foot patrols at the areas, adding that the police would also collaborate with other sister security agencies to ensure incident free election.

‘’We would create an enabling environment to ensure that all, including the EC officials carry out their duties,’’ he said.

He urged the candidates to desist from using ‘macho‘ men in the electoral areas, adding that the police would deal with any person who would promote any acts of lawlessness to disenfranchise the electorates.

DCOP Sarpong called on the public to adhere to security arrangements put in place by the police to ensure an incident free election.

He urged candidates with grievances to channel it to appropriate authorities for redress, rather than putting the law into their own hand.

The seat became vacant following the demise of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament, Mr Emmanuel Kyeremanteng Agyarko on November 21, last year.

The political parties contesting the by-election are the ruling NPP, National Democratic Congress (NDC), Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) and the Progressive Peoples Party (PPP).

The wife of the late MP, Ms Lydia Alhassan, is contesting the by-election on the ticket of the NPP, while Mr Delali Kwasi Brempong is contesting on the ticket of the NDC.

Clement Boadi is contesting on the ticket of the Liberal Party of Ghana and William Dowokpor, for the Progressive People’s Party.
