50 Ablekuma West women trained in vocational skills

Fifty women in the Ablekuma West municipality in Accra have been trained in vocational skills to help them to lead independent lives.

The beneficiaries who were between the ages of 15 and 60 years were taken through six weeks course in hairdressing, weave on, make-up, grooming and personal relationship.

They were also given starter packs which included 20 wigs, shampoo, and wig caps to enable them to set up their own businesses.

The programme was an initiative of the Member of Parliament (MP) for the Ablekuma West Constituency, Mrs Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, in collaboration with the Ablekuma West Municipal Assembly.

The MP said 15 youths were currently undergoing training in driving, adding that they would be given taxi cabs on a ‘work- and- pay’ basis.

Mrs Owusu-Ekuful said the women would be monitored to evaluate their progress of work, and commended the Director of CK 56 Saloon, Ms Irene Akoto who was the facilitator of the training programme.

The Municipal Chief Executive of Ablekuma West, Mr George Cyril Bray, in his remarks assured of the government’s continuous support in ensuring local empowerment, adding that the empowerment of the youth through entrepreneur skills was crucial for development.

He assured of the assembly’s continuous efforts to ensure that the less privileged in the municipality were catered for through such intervention programmes.

“We called on the public to also support the assembly to ensure development in the municipality,” Mr Bray stated.

One of the beneficiaries, Ms Celestina Nusenu, commended the MP and the Assembly for the initiative, stating that it would go a long way to help the youth in the area to be independent.

She urged the assembly to empower more women with entrepreneurial skills to help reduce poverty in the country.
