A Five-Member committee to investigate the vandalism at the Krobea Asante Technical and Vocational Institute, has been inaugurated by the Ashanti Regional Minister, Simon Osei Mensah.
The committee is expected to ascertain the identity of the perpetrators and any other matter they would deem fit.
Chaired by a Justice of the Appeal Court, Justice Samuel Obeng Diawuo, the committee has been given two weeks to submit its report.
Mr Osei Mensah, reminded the committee members of the disturbances at the school which had generated public interest due to the level of destruction and impunity with which it was done.
According to the Minister, there was no clarity as to the actual causes of the riot as well as the extent and the cost of damage, hence they need to set up the committee to investigate the matter.
Expressing confidence in the committee to do a good job, the Minister said “they have been carefully selected from varied relevant background so that they can bring their expertise and experiences to bear in unravelling the matter”.
The Committee Chairman thanked the Minister for the confidence reposed in them and promised to do their best in meeting the objectives of the committee.
Other members of the committee are Rt. Rev. Nuh Ben Abubakar, retired Methodist Bishop, Mr David Adu-Osei, retired Regional Commander of National Intelligence Bureau (NIB), Mr Richard Addo Gyamfi, Acting Ashanti Regional Director, Ghana Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET) Service, and Dr Abeiku Apprey, former Principal, Kumasi Technical Institute.
On January 22, this year, a group of students of the School vandalised school properties running into thousands of Ghana Cedis.
They destroyed the lighting system, dining hall, all the food in the store room of the school.
Six cars were also destroyed by the students, with four of them belonging to the school and two private ones belonging to teachers.
Properties destroyed also included bungalows for senior house mistress, her car, school’s notice board, stores and food stored there.
It took the security doors to save the principal’s room from being damaged, but the dining hall was not exempted.
