The Asokore Mampong District Court in the Ashanti region, has granted a total of GH¢86,000 bail to 43 students of the Krobea Asante Technical and Vocational school.
The students were in court following alleged students’ protest in the school, which led to the destruction of school property, last month.
They were granted GH¢2,000 bail each, with one surety each and who should be a parent or guardian. The students were expected to report to the police once a week.
Thirty nine students were earlier remanded and four others, including the school prefect, who were arrested and appeared before the court, presided over by Mr Samuel Buaben Quansah.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Kofi Blagodzi, prosecuting, stated that the police were pursuing other suspects in connection with the protest.
All the accused student have been charged with conspiracy to commit a crime to wit, unlawful entry, causing unlawful damage, and stealing. Their pleas were not taken.
They allegedly vandalised six cars, four belonging to the school and two private ones, belonging to teachers, the senior house mistress bungalow, her car and school’s notice board.
The case has been adjourned to March 2, 2023.
Meanwhile, the School has been closed indefinitely following the act of vandalism by students, last Sunday.
The students destroyed the lighting system, dining hall, food in the storeroom of the school.
The Ashanti Regional Minister, Simon Osei Mensah, has stated that students who would be found to have vandalised school property would bear the cost of repairs.
A five member committee, headed by Justice Samuel Obeng Diawuo, Justice of the Court of Appeal, has been set up to go into the incident.
The students complained of poor results of the National Vocational Training Institute (NVTI) Certificate Two examination and National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB) certificate.
It is still not clear which of the results the students were referring to.
