37,000 police-cum-military personnel deployed to enforce lockdown

More than 37,500 police and military personnel have been deployed to restricted areas to help enforce measures instituted to prevent the spread of Coronavirus (COVID-19) in the country.

They comprise of 35,000 police personnel and 2,000 military personnel. 

The personnel who were sent to areas such as Accra, in Greater Accra, Kasoa in the Central Region and Kumasi in the Ashanti Region, are general duty men and women, specialised units and professionals among others.

The Director of the Police Public Affairs of the Ghana Police Service, Superintendent Sheila Abayie-Buckman disclosed this to the Ghanaian Times in Accra, stating that the operation was in collaboration with other security agencies such as the Ghana Armed Forces, Immigration and the Bureau of National Investigations. 

She said the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Mr James Oppong-Boanuh has also suspended the annual vacation leave of all police personnel for the period to ensure that all were readily available to execute their duties.

Supt Abayie-Buckman stated that resources such as vehicles, medical supplies have also been deployed to help in enforcing the imposition of the Restriction Act, 2020(Act 1012).

The Director of Public Affairs assured that the police would ensure that people abide by the imposition.

“All persons who breach any part of the restrictions imposed shall be arrested and put before court for prosecution” she added. 

She said the ban on public gatherings such as workshops, conferences, funerals and operations by night clubs was still in force and urged the public to abide by such rules to prevent spreading of the diesese.

Supt Abayaie-Buckman urged the public to observe social distancing and hygiene protocols to prevent the spreading of the disease.

She urged the public to collaborate with the police and sister security agencies to enforce restrictions to prevent the spread of the disease.

“It is the hope of the leadership of the police that everyone will stay home as much as possible to eradicate the coronavirus disease from the country,” she added.
