Over 300 Senior High School librarians in the northern sector have been trained on new methods and skills to manage the libraries effectively and efficiently.
Organised by the Ghana Library Authority (GhLA), the training was meant to revamp and equip school libraries.
A board member of the GhLA, Mr Kofi Sakyiama Antiri, speaking to journalists in Tamale, explained that the training forms part of effort to improve reading at schools.
He added that the training also formed part of the School Libraries Transformation Programme (SLTP) spearheaded by the GhLA, with support from the Ministry of Education (MoE), to inculcate a reading habit among students.
Mr Antiri maintained that efforts were underway to stock school libraries with adequate and appropriate books and other materials.
He further indicated that the GhLA would introduce a software to interconnect schools to serve students and teachers better.
Mr Antiri hinted that the GhLA was planning to institute awards for the best school library as part of efforts to revive libraries across the length and breadth of the country.
He, therefore, urged them to put the training into use by ensuring better use of the libraries in their respective schools.
The Head of School and College Libraries at the GhLA, Mr Sampson Osenda, on his part mentioned that the GhLA was also to improve the infrastructure of the libraries across the country.
He noted that most of school libraries were not in good shape, hence the urgent need to assist put them in proper shape with the needed equipment.
Mr Osenda, however, challenged the heads of the schools to lobby the old students and other stakeholders to assist improve the conditions of the libraries.
