The Member of Parliament (MP) for Yendi Constituency in the Northern Region, Dr Alhaji Farouk Aliu Mahama, has announced that 30 communities in the Constituency would be connected to the national grid by the end of the year.
He said the assessment of the earmarked communities had been completed and contractors would soon commence work in few weeks time.
Dr Mahama made the announcement at the inauguration of the first phase of five communities connected to the national grid in Yimahigu, a beneficiary community on Thursday.
The communities enjoying the first phase of the project include Yimahigu, Oyomdo, Bago, Meidoyili and Kpachani.
He stated that, the earmarked 30 communities were the first batch to be tabled under the rural electrification project.
Dr Mahama assured them that the rest of the communities would also get their share of the project early part of next year.
He added that the initiative formed part of promise he made to the communities during his campaign in the 2020 elections.
“During my campaign tour, I realised that the communities had not connected to the national grid which l made promise to connect them and I’m doing exactly that,” he stated.
He said lighting up the communities would help students in the various communities to have their studies effectively.
Dr Mahama added that provision of electricity to the communities was dear to his heart, hence the need for the provision of electricity to the various communities in the constituency.
He said lightning up the communities would not only improve the lightning system of the communities but would also go a long way to improve their economIC activities.
Dr Mahama added that connecting the communities to the national grid formed part of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s government policy to connect communities across the country to the national grid.
“I am currently lobbying with international partners to get more infrastructure development projects for people,” he said.
Dr Mahama said he was committed to giving the constituency more infrastructure development.
“I am not an arm-chair MP, my duty is to lobby NGO’S and other development partners for more projects for the constituency,” he stated
He said Yendi Constituency would continue to get the needed development as he remained their MP.
Sub chief of Yimahigu, Abdala Fusheini Dasana, commended the MP for connecting them to the national grid.
He said they would no longer trek miles to the neighbouring communities to charge their phones.
Chief Dasana said their children would also now have enough time to study in the night since they now had electricity.
He, however, appealed to the MP to provide them with school buildings and boreholes.
