3 groups present cheque for GH₵950,000 to U/ West flood victims

The Catholic Relief Services (CRS) Ghana, a non-governmental organisation (NGO), on Monday, presented a cheque for GH₵950,000.00 to support people, who were affected by floods that occurred in the Upper West Region, in August this year.

The NGO made the presentation in partnership with the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and the Wa Diocese of the Catholic Church.

The floods which occurred following torrential rains in August, destroyed farms and displaced people after several households were washed down.

The donation is meant for at least 811 affected households in Daffiama Bussei Issah, Nadowli-Kaleo and Wa East districts, respectively.

The country representative of the CRS, Mr Daniel Mumuni, presented the cheque to the Regional Minister, Dr Hafiz Bin Salih.

He said “Following the immense loss of farms and other properties to floods, CRS hopes to support worst-hit households with direct cash to help them address their most pressing needs, which may include food and shelter”.

Mr Mumuni assured that the CRS would continue to support the flood victims.

“The CRS-Ghana prides itself as one of the first NGOs to present an aid of this magnitude to the Upper West Region after the flood and we hope it inspires other organisations to join the call to meet the needs of these communities in distress,” he stated.

Mr Mumuni said that the NGO would continue to partner stakeholders on the development and planning of disaster response and recovery measures.

He called on the Regional Coordinating Council, NADMO and the Wa Diocese to collaborate to mitigate disasters.

Dr Salih who received the donation on behalf of the victims, expressed his appreciation to the CRS and its partners, saying “the support would go a long way to help the flood victims.”

He appealed to the authorities to create awareness on environmental and sanitation hazards caused by flooding.
