2 remanded for assaulting ECG officials

The Accra Circuit Court has remanded into police custody two persons, who allegedly assaulted two officials of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), at Oyarifa during power disconnection exercise.

Mr Shadrack Adjetey Monnie, a 42-year-old building contractor and Mr Anyetei Ezekiel, a 24-year-old construction labourer, have been jointly charged with causing unlawful damage and two counts of assault.

They pleaded not guilty to all the charges, and the court presided over by Mr Samuel Bright Acquah, remanded them into police custody to reappear on June 8, today.

Prosecuting, Mr Paul Assibi Abariga said that the complainants, Mr Thomas Tetteh Yemo and Mr Evans Kwame Ofori, were both technicians from the Dodowa District Office of ECG, while the accused, and others at large were residents of Oyarifa, Accra.

He said that the complainants went to perform their lawful duties by disconnecting all ECG customers who were owing the company at Oyarifa and its environs.

The prosecution said Monnie organised Ezekiel and others at large, to prevent the complainants from carrying out the disconnection at Oyarifa.

Mr Abatiga said the accused and their accomplices ordered Mr Yemo, who was in the compound of a customer, who owed the company, to leave the premises without reason.

The prosecution said the accused pushed Mr Yemo, and he fell into dirty stagnant water, resulting in damage to his Infinix mobile phone.

Mr Abatiga said when Ofori attempted to protect Yemo, the other accused pounced on him (Ofori) and assaulted him.

The prosecution said Ofori managed to leave the compound, and ran towards a commercial vehicle, in an attempt to escape from his attackers.

Mr Abatiga said the accused chased Ofori, and manhandled him.

The prosecution said that the technician lost his ECG Identity card holder and a spectacle in the process.

Mr Abatiga said the police arrested Monnie, whilst his accomplices fled the area.

The prosecution said Ezekiel was arrested by the police at Ayi Mensah and Mr Yemo identified him (Ezekiel) as one of the people who attacked and assaulted them.

Mr Abatiga said the accused were handed over to the investigation unit of ECG for further action and police medical forms were issued to the complainants for treatment. – GNA
