2 policemen drown while pursuing armed robbers at Kobro

The efforts of a team of policemen to effect the arrest of some suspected robbers have resulted in two of them drowning in the Oda river at Kobro village, near Jacobu, in the Amansie Central District of Ashanti Region.

They have been identified as Lance Corporals, Stephen Kyeremeh and  Amedius Akwesi Boateng, both of Obuasi District Police Command.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Godwin Ahianyo, Head of the Ashanti Regional Police Public Affairs Unit, confirmed the incident to the Ghanaian Times here, yesterday, saying it took place on Wednesday.

He would not give much details, but said a search was underway as part of the investigation into the drowning.

The Ghanaian Times, however, gathered that two other policemen, Sergeants, Isaac Nyamekye, and James Ahiman, and their colleagues were on patrol duty on the Obuasi-Dunkwa highway.

The police team, according to the information received by the Ghanaian Times, had a distress call that some small-scale miners had been attacked by some suspected robbers armed with AK 47 assault rifles at Kobro.

The police team proceeded to Kobro, but to get to the robbery scene, they picked a canoe to cross the Oda river.

But, the robbers escaped upon seeing the police.

On their way back, the canoe on which all were on board, overturned.

The two Sergeants managed to swim ashore, whilst the other two Lance Corporals together with their service rifles were carried away by the waters and they are yet-to-be traced.
