2 NGOs support 60 widows, aged women

Two non-governmental organisations (NGOs) yesterday donated assorted items to 60 widows and aged women, at Sasekpe, in the Central Tongu District of the Volta Region.

The West African Centre for Peace Studies and Megyikra Memorial Music and Culture Institute, donated 50 wax prints, rice, tin fish, soft drinks and cooking oil, all valued at GH¢40,000.

The leader of the institute, Erasmus Megyikra, said that the donation was to put smiles on the faces of the widows.

He said it also forms part of the peace promotion campaign and corporate social responsibility of the two groups.

Mr Megyikra said the violent extremism in West Africa coupled with climate change challenges, were pushing the youth, including widows and widowers, to join radical groups.

Mrs Gifty Mensah Migyikra, also a member of the institute, said her mother went through a terrible ordeal after her father’s death.

She said her mother single handedly took care of her, and urged families to reach out to widows in society.

The Paramount Queen of Mafi Sasekpe Traditional Area, Mama Klebetesi III, who received the items on behalf of the widows, thanked the two groups for the gesture.

She called on government to site a gari and cassava flour factory in the area, to employ the teeming unemployed youth.

Mama Klebetesi said any such move would boost the local economy and the buying of raw material produced in the area.

She, therefore, appealed to the NGOs to partner the government, to establish a factory for widows in the area to create market for cassava.
