2 illegal miners trapped to death in pit

Two out of three illegal miners, who were trapped in a mining pit at Manso Datano in the Manso Edubiase District of Ashanti, have died.

The deceased believed to be aged between 29 years and 30 years, were rescued from the pit on Monday, May 11, at about 11:50am, and were pronounced dead on arrival at the Tontokrom Health Centre.

Their bodies have since been deposited at the morgue at St Martin’s Catholic Hospital at Manso Agroyesum for identification.

Chief Inspector Christian Amartey, station officer for the Manso Dataso Police,  confirmed the incident and mentioned that the third person, who was very weak at the time of rescue, was receiving treatment at the hospital

The station officer said Yaw Akowuah and Kwadwo Asanfo, both committee members of Manso Tontokrom, brought the deceased in a taxi cab with the registration number GT 8906-18, to the station to lodge a formal complaint.

Chief Insp Amartey said the complainants said they had a call that three illegal miners had been trapped in an illegal mining pit.

He said when some people arrived at the site, they realised that illegal miners had rescued their colleagues, the three victims, and they were rushed to a health centre, where the two were pronounced dead by a medical officer.
