2 grabbed for attempting to buy AK- 47 assault rifle

Two persons, who attempted to purchase an AK- 47 assault rifle at Nsakina near Ablekuma, Accra, have been arrested by the police.

Nicholas Odor, 50, businessman, and George Nanpanan, 21, a commercial motorcyclist, were currently in the custody of the police assisting in investigations.

Inspector (Insp) Kwabena Danso of the Greater Accra Regional Police Public Relations confirmed the story to the Ghanaian Times in Accra yesterday.

He stated that the suspects were arrested following a tip-off to the police that suspects wanted to buy an AK 47 rifle.

Insp Danso said at about 3p.m on August 30, this year, the police grabbed the suspects at Nsakina when they attempted buying the rifle.

Insp Danso said during interrogation, they told the police they wanted to buy the gun for hunting.

He said the suspects have since been charged for abetment and attempting to commit crime to wit an unlawful possession of fire ammunition without authority.

However, Insp Danso has refuted claims in some section of the media that three men have been arrested for their alleged involvement in the shipment of some 59 AK-47 assault rifle from Accra to the Northern Region.
