2 fake ECG staff grabbed

Two people, who posed as Disconnection Officers of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), and extorted money from some customers, have been arrested.

The suspects have been identified as Richard Nii Moi and Edward Quartey.

The ECG Achimota District Manager, Mrs Mary Kpordzih, said the suspects posed as Revenue Collection and Disconnection Officers of ECG, and extorted money from customers, who could not show receipts of recent payment of ECG bills.

“Their mode of operation, however, made some of the residents suspicious, and they demand to see their identification, which proved futile,” she said.

The District Manager said the residents raised the alarm and reported their activities to the ECG Achimota District Office.

Mrs Kpordzih said the suspects, who were tracked and arrested, were currently in police custody assisting in investigations

She commended the residents for their vigilance and asked customers to always verify the identity of persons, who would visit their premises claiming to be ECG staff.

“When in doubt, always report such suspicious persons to the nearest ECG office or to the police station,” Mrs Kpordzih said.

Meanwhile, ECG recently increased its revenue collection activities, including the commissioning of a National Revenue Taskforce to clamp down on customers engaged in illegality. – GNA
