2 Chinese arrested for illegal lumbering, charcoal burning at Have

Two Chinese nationals have been picked up by a combined team of the Police, Immigration and the BNI for allegedly illegally lumbering and charcoal burning at Have Ando No.1 in the Afadzato South District.

The two Wang Kun and Wei Yiyi claimed their passports are in the custody of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS).

Items seized in the swoop on their cottage in the forest included a generator, two solar panels, a solar connector and a heavy duty scale.

Others are a chainsaw machine, a knapsack sprayer and a hammer.

The two who were arrested upon a tip-off said they were in the area at the instance of a chief of the area.

According to sources, they were engaged in felling of trees and burning charcoal which they export out of the country.

They have been handed over to the GIS for further screening and investigation.

The DCE for the area, Mr Wisdom Semanu Seneadza, who caused their arrest expressed his disgust at the wanton destruction of the forest.

He noted that such an action was in fragrant disregard to President Nana Akufo-Addo’s relentless effort to preserve the country’s water-bodies and forests.

“And it would be uncalled for, for those of us in the districts to turn a blind eye when such acts are going on especially by  foreigners whose activities could be described as illegal,” he said.

He thus commended the whistle blowers caused the arrest and said they had lived up to the dictates of Act 41(f) of the 1992 constitution, inter alia…….”Its shall be the duty of every citizen to protect and preserve public property and expose, combat misuse and waste of public funds and property.”
