2 children die in fire outbreak at Donoso

Two children were killed when fire swept through a six-bedroom apartment at Donoso in the Ejisu Juabeng Municipality of Ashanti, last Friday evening.

The two-year-old girl and four-year- old boy, were said to have been recovered by the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) personnel, who arrived to quench the fire, which started around 6:30 pm on Friday.

According to preliminary investigations by the GNFS personnel, the blaze was believed to have started from the ceiling of one of the bedrooms.

The GNFS received a distress call at 7:31 pm, and it took personnel about 20 minutes to get to the scene.

The Ashanti Region Public Relations Officer for the GNFS, Assistant Divisional Officer 1 Desmond Ackah, told journalists it took personnel about 50 minutes to bring the fire under control.

“There was little we could do to salvage anything from such an incident because of the rapid spread and the intensity of the blaze,” he noted.

A DO 1 Ackah said the personnel were able to protect adjoining structures from the fire.

The GNFS Ashanti Region Public Relations Officer said: “we could have just used about five minutes to get to the fire scene, but for a bridge that has been damaged for more than a year now in the Donaso community, so we had to use an alternate route that took about 21 minutes”.

He said “as investigations continue, the service is suspecting an electrical fault as the cause of the fire. Our investigation points to the fact that barely some weeks ago, they had electrical challenges and, therefore, they sought the services of an electrician”.
