Malawi can only afford to send two boxers to Accra for the African Games.
The Malawi Amateur Boxing Association (MABA) named eight boxers for the Games but the cash-strapped Malawian government can only afford to cater for two boxers.
The duo includes light-welterweight, Elias Bonzo, and welterweight, Lewis Zakeyu.
The two boxers, together with female featherweight, Natasha Maya, represented Malawi in the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games.
Scarcity of funds has been a major stumbling block for MABA, reflecting on the unstable financial situation of Malawi.
Despite the financial hiccups facing MABA, boxing still remains one of the successful disciplines in Malawi with three boxers winning bronze medals at the Commonwealth Games. The first one to win bronze was lightweight Tatu Chionga in 1970 in Edinburgh with lightweight, Lyton Mphande, and welterweight, Solomon Kondowe, bagging bronze medals at the 1986 Commonwealth Games.
Malawi first took part in the African Games in 1973 in Lagos, Nigeria, and so far the boxers have yet to win a medal in the Games.
Against this background of financial desperation and inadequate preparations, the two Accra-bound Malawian boxers will be hard-pressed to excel in the 13th edition of the African Games in the Accra.
