2 blacksmiths, others arrested for illegally manufacturing local guns

Five persons have been arrested by the Central Regional Police Command, at Assin Foso, for their involvement in the manufacture of local guns.

The suspects are Pele Aziaku, 50, and Washington Kpovi, 40, all blacksmiths, and three others, who are minors, aged between 16 and 17.

Briefing journalists in Cape Coast, the Central Regional Police Commander, COP Paul Manly Awini, said that the three were arrested upon intelligence gathered by the police at three different locations in Assin Foso.

The Regional Police Commander mentioned that the police during the exercise, retrieved one locally manufactured pistol, six barrel gun, an equipment adapted for producing locally manufactured guns, a butt of a weapon, assault knives, white substance suspected to be cocaine and scissors from the suspects.

In a related development, he said the police had mounted a search for robbers who attacked passengers at Gomoa Potsin junction, on the Cape Coast-Accra highway on Thursday.

COP Awuni stated that the police received distress call around 6:30pm and dispatched a team from different locations, but the armed men, who attacked six vehicles and robbed passengers, fled before the police arrived at the scene.

He said the police had reviewed its tactics and strategies to ensure that any such incidence did not occur anywhere in the region.

COP Awuni urged the public to provide information that would lead to the arrest of the robbers, and gave the assurance that the police would provide security for all citizens.
