11-year-old girl dies in fire at Meduma

An 11-year-old girl has died after  fire gutted a house at Meduma, in the Kwabre East Municipality of the Ashanti Region, on Tuesday. 

Properties running into hundreds of Ghana Cedis were also destroyed in the fire.
Personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), afterquenching the fire, handed over the body of the girl to the police, which has been deposited at the mortuary.

Ashanti Regional Public Relations Officer of the GNFS, D.O III Peter Addai, who confirmed the incident to the Ghanaian Times, said investigations were underway, to identify cause of the fire.

He said when the GNFS received distress call that there was fire in a house at Meduma, near the KomfoAnokye Senior High Schoolthe personnel went there and put the situation under control.

He said “we swiftly responded and when we got to the scene, the fire had engulfed the whole house. But we managed to extinguish it.But, an 11-year-old girl lost her life as a result of the fire.”

The Assembly Member of the area, George Oppong,also confirmed the incident, saying the body of the girl had been handed over to the Mampongteng police for further investigations.

It is recalled that in February, this year, a65-year-old man was burnt to death at a house in Kyerease, a suburb of Kronom, in the Suame Municipality of the Ashanti Region.

Ten out of the 15 rooms of the house were completely burnt and KwadwoAsare, who was said to be bedridden and could not escape during the blaze, was found burnt to death in one of the gutted rooms,when GNFS personnel went to the scene.
