1 killed following police-youth clash at Nkoranza

One person is reported dead after the youth of Nkoranza, in Bono East Region went on rampage and attacked the Nkoranza Police Station demanding justice for Albert Donkor, a 28-year-old trader.

During the attack, the youth freed six suspects,arrested together with Donkor, by the police, as armed robbers, on Tuesday, May 17, 2022.

A statement signed by theDeputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP)KwesiOfori, Director-General, Public Affairs, and copied to the Ghana News Agency,confirmed the death.

It said the attacktook place during a protest against the death of Donkor, a suspected armed robber, who died during a police anti-robbery operation.

The statement said six personswere injured during the attack and taken to the St. Theresa’s Hospital, Nkoranza.

It said that according to hospital authorities, one of the victims died while receiving treatment while the remaining fivewere currently on admission at the hospital.

The statement said that the police responded appropriately to the situation (attack) by bringingpolice reinforcement teams from the Regional Headquarters and adjoining regions, to restore law and order,leading to the arrest of two suspects in connection with the attack.

It said the situation was under control as the police had been deployed to Nkoranza and its environs, to pursue allother persons involved in the attack to face justice.

The statement asked all law-abiding citizens to go about their socio-economic activities without fear or hindrance and that the police weretaking steps to protect lives and property.

It also thanked the public for the support and encouragement as the police performedits constitutional mandate.- GNA
