The policemen, who were part of a four-member patrol team, were reported to have gone to the house of Esther to arrest the husband, Numoo Manle Ashong, after a court warrant was issued, following his alleged involvement in a fraudulent land transaction.

The Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Accra Regional Police Command, Deputy Superintendent of Police, (DSP) Effia Tenge, disclosed these to the Ghanaian Times in Accra yesterday.

She stated that the mob took from the policemen magazine to their riffle, containing ten rounds of ammunition, and the ‘Gotta’ police communication gadgets.

DSP Tenge said on April 18, at about 7pm, Inspector Kagya in charge of the patrol team, went to apprehend Numoo Manle Ashong, after the Kwabenya Circuit Court issued an arrest warrant, for engaging in a fraudulent land transaction.

She said when the police went the house of Numoo Manle Ashong at Teiman, he resisted arrest, and mobilsed the mob to attack the patrol team.

DSP Tenge said in the process, Sgt Adzande was hit in the head with a stick and blood oozed, and Insp Kagya was assaulted and a magazine containing ten rounds of ammunition to the riffle was taken from them.

The Police PRO said the colleagues of the injured and assaulted policemen rushed them to the Danfa Health Centre and they were later transferred to the Police Hospital for further treatment.

DSP Tenge said the following day, the Abokobi District Police Commander, Superintendent of Police (Supt) Edward Tetteh, led a team of police to arrest the two suspects, to assist in investigations.

She said investigations revealed that Ashong fled the house the same day after the incident, adding that the police retrieved the magazine and the gotta that had been abandoned at a football pitch at Teiman.

DSP Tenge said the police were searching for other suspects.

The PRO said the two suspects would be arraigned for assault on police officers and obstructing public officials in conducting lawful duty.
