MTN Ghana has expressed grave concern about the rampant fibre cuts which have now risen from 50 cuts per month to 149 cuts per month.
At a media encounter held in Kumasi, Corporate Services Executive, Samuel Koranteng, revealed that fibre cable cuts, mostly caused by construction work cost MTN about GH¢39 million in revenue losses and also cost the nation GH¢17,580,000 in lost taxes.
He
explained that the largest telecommunication company in Ghana was sinking huge
amounts of money into fixing cut fibre cables saying it costs over GH¢6,500 to
fix one cut, with its implications affecting revenue and quality of service.
He commended some companies including the Ghana Water Company Limited, Zhongmei
Engineering Group, CHEC and CHICO for engaging MTN ahead of any work that
involves digging and encouraged other contractors to learn from them.
Another major challenge that was highlighted was the issue of battery theft.
“Though the incidence of battery theft has reduced significantly, MTN still lost about 5.4 million US dollars, last year through battery theft,” Mr Koranteng said.
The forum formed part of MTN’s annual Ashantifest programme.
General Manager-Sales of MTN Northern Business District, Nii Adotey Mingle, said that the Ashantifest was MTN’s celebration of Asanteman and presents an opportunity for MTN to show her appreciation to customers within the region.
He outlined some events that would mark the celebration of the Ashantifest including a walk, targeted activations, interactions with customers, mobile money fraud education, movie mania amongst others.
