Initiative to encourage waste management launched in Tema

HEAP (Help Eradicate All Pollution) Foundation, an initiative that seeks to inspire the youth to separate waste to improve waste management in the Tema metropolis, has been launched under the theme: “Catch Them Young.”

Speaking at the ceremony, the founder of HEAP Foundation, Ms Joyce Saman Larba, called on Ghanaians to see waste as a resource, which when separated into components like paper, plastic, organic waste and glass, among others, would yield resources for sustainable development.

She urged basic school and junior high school students, in particular, to embrace the call to separate waste to keep a clean surrounding, and make some money for themselves by selling the segregated waste as resources to recycling industries.

Ms Joyce Larba, who is also Miss Tema Metro 2018, said the foundation supports the Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA) restoration agenda and would advocate for clean Ghana to achieve the Sustainable Development Goal 6 (clean water and sanitation) by 2030.

The Deputy Head of Waste Management TMA, Dr Lucy Akua Tetteh, said segregating waste into paper, plastic, metal and organic makes it easier to process them into reusable material for production.

That, she said, reduced the amount of waste received at the landfill site, thereby increasing the life span of the facility.

She said on pilot basis, the TMA had given 30 schools five different bins each to assist in the separation of paper, plastic, metal, glass and organic waste.

The Tema Metropolitan Director of National Commission for Civic Education, Isaac Antwi, called on the TMA to enforce its sanitation bye laws by prosecuting offenders to help change attitude towards waste in the metropolis.

Richard Aning, who chaired the function, advised residents who could not afford bins to begin by using separate polythene bags to separate waste.
