The Administrator of the Integrated Community Centres for Employable Skills, (ICCES) at Dodowa in the Greater Accra Region, Mr Seth Botchway, has appealed to the government and philanthropists to help complete the abandoned two-storey hostel project for the school.
He said the 400-bed capacity project was started by the District Assembly in 1999.
He made the appeal when Hearty Love Foundation, a non-governmental organisation presented assorted tools to the school last Friday.
According to Mr Botchway, most parents were reluctant to enroll their wards into the school because of lack of accommodation.
“Potential students who come from far places always have issues with accommodation and having the hostel completed would solve the problem,” he said.
He said the current population is 147 but could increase if the hostel is completed.
The Administrator stated that the school does not also have a staff bungalow as most tutors had to commute from other parts of the region.
Mr Botchway said a section of the ground floor had been converted into a sleeping place for some students who do not reside in the area stating that the fortunes of the school could change if the necessary infrastructure was provided.
He said the classrooms were also not enough to accommodate all departments, saying there is no kitchen for the cooking department even though it is about 80 per cent equipped.
The Administrator stated that the centre lacks modern tools and equipment in the electrical and masonry departments and some staff are also needed to improve teaching and learning.
Mr Botchway urged stakeholders to as a matter of urgency support government’s effort at making skills acquisition a priority in order to get the needed man power for the country’s industries.
