Gwirasec appeals for boarding facility

The headmistress of Gwiraman Senior High School (GWIRASEC), Mrs Ernestina Kankam, has appealed to the government to consider providing a boarding facility for the school.

That, she said, would save the students the burden of travelling from far places to attend school and leaving under no control.

The headmistress of GWIRASEC, one of the model schools in the Nzema East municipality of the Western Region, Mrs Kankam, made the appeal at the school’s maiden speech and prize- giving day held on Saturday.

It was on the theme: ‘The role of stakeholders in promoting academic excellence in developing schools.’

The headmistress said that most of the students and staff came from far places and therefore,   were compelled to rent accommodation in places that were mostly inconvenient and unsuitable.

“Our biggest challenge is lack of accommodation. Ours is a school that has no single accommodation for members of staff; not even the headmistress. I will humbly request the Deputy Regional Minister and the Deputy Minister of Education to do all in their power to change the status of the school.

She said, the school, which started in October 2015, with 479 students, presently has 918 students with 83 staff members.

Mrs Kankam said, the Home Economics and Visual Art Departments, had no furnishing  and that  very  soon, students would have to travel long distances to nearby schools to write the West African Secondary School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), by March ending.

The Home Economics Department needs items such as furniture, two deep freezers, two large fridges, ten cookers with oven, cooking utensils, sinks and working tables and also a generator and system to provide electricity to reduce the school’s reliance on the  national grid for power.

Despite the challenges, Mrs Kankam mentioned that GWIRASEC had made some strides in academic work as 10 out of the 479 candidates who sat for the 2017/18  WASSCE, gained admission into the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT), Tarkwa.

The guest speaker, and also Acting Head of the Department of Publishing at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Dr Samuel Smith Esseh, noted the role of students, teachers and parents in achieving academic excellence, urging that “students must have the burning desire to learn and pass well”.

He stressed that, “This is a motivational drive that is constantly rekindled by one’s aim of attending school and must be your constant reminder in your sleep and wherever you find yourselves.”

The Minister of State at the Presidency, Mrs Catherin Abelema Afeku, pledged to support the school in solving the accommodation challenges facing it and improving academic work.
