30 women trained in soap making

Thirty women selected from three communities in the Nzema East Municipality have been trained in soap making.

The women, at a three-day  training were taught how to make bar soap, round balls popularly called Azumah blows, parazon, floor cleaner, liquid soap, dusting powder and normal powder.

Addressing the closing ceremony at Axim in the Western Region, the Executive Director of United Civil Society Organisation for National Development (UCSOND), a local Non-governmental Organisation, Mr Wisdom Quaiku, said the training formed part of measures by UCSOND to fight climate change.

He said UCSOND in partnership with the Nzema East Municipality and the Ellembelle District with funding from DANIDA through Care International was embarking on a four-year project, dubbed  “Yen sori” which means “let us wake up” to fight climate change in different ways.

He said under the project both men and women in the area would plant tress to create forests to absorb carbon dioxide from the environment.

He said in the past, Azim could receive heavy rainfall continuously for one week, but currently, rainfall in the area was dwindling, saying “One way to reduce the effects of climate change is to put in measures that will prevent emissions into the atmosphere.”

The Executive Director said the thirty women would in the future be the trainer of trainees to spread the good news to other communities in the municipality.

He appealed to the beneficiaries to go back to their respective communities and practise what they have learnt but not to leave the materials on the shelves to gather cobwebs and also be good ambassadors of the workshop.

A participant, Miss Linda Assan said the workshop would help them, especially the young ones, grow with an acquired skill where they could get some income to support their families.
