TMA gives items worth GH¢119,785 to 62 PWDs

The Metropolitan Chief Executive of Tema, Mr Felix Nii Anang-La, has advised Persons Living with Disability (PWDs) to take advantage of support given to them by government to live life with dignity.

“You have a huge potential in you that when developed can enable you to contribute your quota to national development just like anyone, so do not allow disability to limit you or push you to beg for alms,” he said.

Nii Anang-La gave the advice last week when the Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA) distributed tools, medical and educational support worth GH¢119,785.00 to 62 beneficiaries.

The tools included deep freezers, industrial sewing machines, computers and accessories, plastic bowls and provisions.

He said the gesture was in line with President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s vision to empower every Ghanaian, especially PWDs.

Nii Anang-La said GH¢7,778.00 of the amount would be used to cater for the medical bills of beneficiaries, while GH¢4,178.00 would go into tuition and other related expenses, and GH¢107,500.00 for business support.

Nii Anang-La explained that 10 other beneficiaries requested for container grocery shops (provision stores) which were being fabricated, adding that when completed the containers would be stocked with provisions and delivered to the beneficiaries.

He said in May 2019, GH¢51,409.00 was disbursed to the first batch of 51 beneficiaries to support their business, medical and educational bills.

Nii Anang-La advised the beneficiaries to take good care of their tools and work hard to save towards the future.

He thanked the District Disability Fund Management Committee for the selection of beneficiaries and their choice of items, which were expected to make a positive impact in their lives.

An Assistant Director of TMA, Kwadwo Gyamfi, said government increased the share of the common fund for PWDs from two to three per cent, so that more beneficiaries could be supported with tools or income generating items to start their own business and live decent lives.

Chairman of the Tema Disability Association, Peter Agbogedenu, thanked the President for the intervention which, he said, would go a long way to improve the livelihood of their members and enhance their dignity.
