One shot dead as Okada riders clash with Police at Senchi

One person has been confirmed dead in clashes between Police and angry Okada riders at Senchi in the Asuogyaman District of the Eastern Region.

The deceased was shot when police were firing warning shots to disperse the mob who had massed up at the police station to demand the release of two of their colleagues arrested by the police.

A reinforcement team from Akosombo division were brought in to help maintain law and order.

The incident occurred around 10pm last Sunday.

Sergeant Francis Gomado of the Asuogyaman police command told Starr News the two suspect riders were arrested by Police officers on snap check duty on the Senchi to Atimpoku road for riding unregistered motorbike.

The suspects resisted arrest and attempted to disarm one of the Police officers but were overpowered and put behind bars.

However, some irate youth mostly okada riders besieged the Police station demanding release of the two suspects leading to clashes between them and the Police.

In the course of the attack, police discharged warning shots ostensibly to disperse the mob but one person was accidentally hit by the bullet and died instantly.

Sergeant Gomado said the body of the deceased had been deposited at the Atua Government Hospital Morgue and investigation has been instituted by the Regional Police Command into the incident.

Meanwhile, there is uneasy calm in the community despite the presence of Police personnel.
