Murder of investigative journalist: Police grab suspected assassin …attempts to bribe police with GH¢20,000

Four months after the assassination of Ahmed Suale, an investigative journalist, one of the suspected killers has been arrested.

Abdul-Rashid Meizongo, 29, who has been on the police wanted list for some time now , was reported to have attempted to bribe  police officers with GH¢20,000 for them to stop pursuing him.

He is in the custody of the police assisting in investigations, the Accra Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Kweku Boadu-Peprah told the Ghanaian Times in Accra yesterday.

The Commander said on April 11 2019, at about 10:30 a.m the suspect arranged a meeting at the West Hills Mall in Accra where he was going to bribe the Police to prevent them from arresting him (Meizongo).

DCOP Boadu-Peprah said he attempted to bribe the officers when he was accosted at the mall, adding that an amount of GH¢20,000 was found on him during his arrest.

The Commander said the suspect has since been transferred to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) headquarters of the Ghana Police Service for further investigations.

The Ghanaian Times reported in its January 18, 2019  edition that Suale,31, was shot three times in the chest and the neck by two gunmen on an unregistered motorcycle when he was driving home.

The motive behind the murder of the investigative journalist remains unclear but Police account said the young man had been shot by two unknown gunmen on an unregistered motorcycle at Madina Estates near Queen of Peace Catholic Church.

The late Suale had been involved in high profile investigative stories including Number 12, a documentary by Tiger Eye PI which exposed corruption in football administration in the country.

According to the police about 13 people including Mr Kennedy Agyapong, the Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Mr Kwesi Nyantakyi, former President of the Ghana Football Association and Anas Aremeyaw Anas, an investigative journalist, have since been invited and statements taken from them as part of investigations.

Subsequently, the policeaAdministration announced GH¢15,000 reward for anyone who could provide information for the arrest of suspects in the heinous crime.
