Ghana Immigration Service inaugurates identity fraud, irregular migration training centre in Accra

The Document Fraud Expertise Centre (DFEC) of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) inaugurated a training facility on Friday to equip its personnel in the fight against identity fraud and irregular migration.

The building of the facility, which is the first of its kind in the sub-region was fully sponsored by the Federal Police of Germany.

In a speech read on his behalf at the commissioning of the facility, the Minister of the Interior, Mr Ambrose Dery, said there was the need for a well thought out, innovative and proactive approach to migration management in Ghana and Africa at large.

This, he stressed would promote effective border security which ensures good profiling and document fraud identification, reducing the threat of insecurity.

He commended the GIS for effectively “securing our borders, maintaining the country’s territorial integrity and ensuring our economic wellbeing.”

According to the Minister, the training of personnel in document fraud identification was very important and should be enhanced.

“It is for this reason that the Ministry of the Interior welcomes this facility, it has come at the right time to augment the efforts of government and that of the Service to improve the capacity of officers in Document Fraud Detection,” he added.

He expressed gratitude to the government of Germany for the kind gesture, saying his outfit was very grateful for the support.

The Minister was hopeful that the facility would go a long way in fighting transnational organised crimes such as drug trafficking and money laundering.

The German Ambassador to Ghana, Mr Christopher Retzlaff, said security plays a crucial role in development that was why the government of Germany would not relent in its effort to provide support for security related issues in the country  and beyond.

He said he was glad his outfit was associated with the establishment of the facility saying, it was a step in the right direction.

The Comptroller General of the GIS,  Mr Kwame Asuah Takyi,  said the Centre would immensely boost capacity building of personnel of the Service and its sister stakeholder institutions which include the Police Criminal Investigation Department (CID), the Judiciary, the passport office and the Registrar of Marriages.

Describing the building of the training facility as timely, he said it would build the capacity of the DFEC in conducting further training for all concerned.

The Comptroller General of the GIS also expressed gratitude to the German Federal Police for the facility and their promise to equip it with fraud detection equipment.

Mr Takyi charged the personnel of DFEC to ensure that strict maintenance culture was adhered to in ensuring a long life span of the facility.
