The Chief o f Staff, Mrs Frema Osei Opare, last Friday presented assorted items to the New Life Children’s Home International at Nungua in the Greater Accra Region.
The items included beverages, bottled water, detergents, soft drinks, bags of sugar and rice, toilet roll and cartons of indomie.
The presentation, which was collaboration with the Ayawaso West Municipal Chief Executive, Mrs Sandra Owusu-Ahenkora, sought to assist the home to take good care of the inmates who are between the ages of three months and 22 years.
Mr Jeffery Amoako, speaking on behalf of Mrs Opare, said it was the responsibility of every Ghanaian to give back to society, especially the vulnerable and the under privileged.
According to him, the Chief of Staff had been so passionate about the home and would always contribute her widow’s mite to ensure that the inmates lived comfortable lives that would make them feel being part of society.
Mr Amoako said Mrs Opare had been nurturing young professionals with the compassion to reach out to the vulnerable to ensure that their daily needs were provided.
The founder of the home, Nii Afotey Botwe, urged women not to give birth, if they were not ready to do so.
According to him, abandoning babies after giving birth should not be encouraged, since that child might not be able to trace the parents, and will forever be a misery to him or her, especially if the necessary counseling measures were not put in place.
Nii Botwe said the home had established a vocational training institute to give the inmates various skills in technical and vocational education to empower them to become self-sufficient, adding that “the home currently house about 90 inmates, and also cater for 180 persons with disabilities”.
The founder of the home urged philanthropists and corporate institutions to support the home to offer quality education for the inmates “as the centre does not receive subvention from the Department of Social Welfare or government”.
Nii Botwe said most of the inmates who had completed various tertiary institutions and were working, see the home as the only place they know, and frequently come to the home to mentor the younger ones.
A musical concert was organised to unearth the talent in the inmates.
