Beware of TV, radio, social media lotto fraudsters—NLA warns public

The National Lottery Authority (NLA) has urged the public to be cautious of lotto fraudsters using different platforms and strategies to dupe unsuspecting people.

The fraudsters use radio and television adverts, text messages, and online platforms like Facebook and Whatsapp in their operations, a statement from the NLA said.

“The lotto fraudsters and social media miscreants have defrauded a lot of unsuspecting people through several Facebook accounts/pages, WhatsApp platforms and other social media handles they have created,” the statement said.

The fraudsters use the name and logo of the NLA in different formats, pictures of Kofi Osei-Ameyaw, the Director-General of NLA, pictures and images of staff, and imposters who pose as staff of the authority.

It said the miscreants promise to make their victims rich overnight and convince them to make Mobile Money transfers to them in exchange for winning lotto numbers.

The statement stressed that the NLA had not authorised nor appointed any individual or group of individuals to offer winning lotto numbers to the public.

Neither had it opened any social media accounts, it added

“The authority has not designed a registration form for the public to register for winning lotto numbers”.

“The outcome of draws are conducted in a very open and transparent manner and it is always open to the public for witnessing at 6:30pm daily for original 5/90 and 7:30am daily for NLA VAG Lotto except Sundays and public holidays,” it said.

The statement said Mr Osei-Ameyaw was not on Facebook and other social media platforms, indicating that the NLA would not be responsible for any losses incurred by unsuspecting people who fall victims to lotto fraudsters

“The National Lottery Authority (NLA) would like to urge the public to be more vigilant, avoid greed and discontinue engaging the services of the lotto fraudsters and social media miscreants,” it said.
