45 policemen undergo training programme on sexual, gender base violence

Forty -five officers of the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) from across the country have undergone a two-day training programme on data management of Sexual and Gender Base Violence (SGBV) in Accra.

It was aimed at strengthening national capacity for programme co-ordination and dissemination of quality statistics for population dynamics.

The training was held under the auspices of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) and in collaboration with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).

The Director-General of CID, Commissioner of Police (COP) Maame Yaa Tiwaah Addo-Danquah in a speech read on her behalf, urged stakeholders to collaborate in reducing domestic violence cases in the country.

 Delivered by her deputy, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) George Tweneboah at the opening ceremony, in Accra, on Wednesday, Madam Addo-Danquah said DOVVSU was mandated to handle domestic violence issues, particulary against children and vulnerable adults.

The Director-General said the DOVVSU also collaborates with stakeholders to provide a coordinated and timely response to victims of abuse.

The CID boss assured the officers of the Police administration’s continuous efforts in helping them achieve their mandate.

The Deputy Coordinator of DOVVSU, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Rose Haligah, in her remarks, said the training of officers was crucial to generate statistical reports that meet international standards.

She said the reports generated by the unit on monthly basis for the consumption of government agencies and for individuals for academic research work.

A representative of the UNFPA, Dr Robert Mensah in his remarks, said data collection and analysis were key in effectiveness of targeted service delivery, advocacy, policy development and accountability and monitoring.

He said DOVVSU with support from the UNFPA developed and launched the Data Management System in 2016 to ensure that statistics related to sexual and gender-base violence were properly and easily collected across the country.

Dr Mensah assured of the UNFPA’s continuous efforts to help DOVVSU in achieving their goals.
