A woman, had her left arm severed, while 30 others who suffered various degrees of injuries, were rushed to the Peki Government Hospital, following a dreadful accident on the Tsibu-Peki stretch of the Eastern Corridor Road on Tuesday.
The woman who was not identified immediately is believed to be in her 50s.
The incident involved a 33-seater bus, with registration number GS 5631-19, which was travelling from Dambai in the Oti Region to Accra.
The driver of the bus was said to be in the process of veering pass a stationary taxi in the lane of the bus and the taxi suddenly made a u-turn.
The bus driver attempted to avoid the taxi and in the process lost control of the steering wheel, resulting in the bus falling on one side.
Personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), police and the National Ambulance Service immediately rushed the victims to the hospital.
According to GNFS personnel, who took part in the rescue mission, the accident was about the fourth on the same stretch in the last four months.
“The Asikuma-Peki portion of the Eastern Corridor Road is just horrible and dangerous to vehicular movement,” the spokesman said.
According to the spokesman most drivers plying the road, drive recklessly and at high speed.
“A little patience on the road by the drivers could avoid these accidents,” the spokesman added.
On June 18, for instance, about 11 people were injured when a Toyota mini-bus and Land Cruiser Jeep collided head-on, at the same spot.
When contacted yesterday, Dr A. Makafui Dzakpasu, Medical Superintendent in-charge of the Peki Government Hospital, said that apart from the woman, who lost ‘the entire left upper arm,’ the others who sustained abrasions, lacerations and chest contusions were in stable conditions.
