2 killed as classroom block collapses at Ayawaso

TWO persons were confirmed dead last Saturday when part of a classroom block they were working on collapsed at Ayawaso West municipality in the Greater Accra Region.

The bodies of the deceased had been deposited at the Accra Police Mortuary, while eight others who suffered injuries were treated and discharged from the Nyaho Medical Centre.

A statement signed and copied the Ghanaian Times by Joshua Adams Esihene, Secretary, Municipal Security Council (MUSEC) of the Ayawaso West Municipal Assembly said the cause of the disaster is yet to be ascertained.

It said one person is still on admission and responding to treatment.

The statement said that four persons escaped unhurt.

The collapsed structure which comes with ancillary facilities; Information and Communications Technology (ICT) centre, laboratory and library, kindergarten one and two was being funded by the Accra Friendship Club, a philanthropic group.  

The Municipal Chief Executive for Ayawaso West Municipal Assembly, Mrs Sandra Owusu Ahinkorah together with officials from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and other security agencies had visited the accident scene and subsequently summoned an emergency meeting to discuss the way forward.

According to the statement, the debris had since been collected upon the advice of MUSEC while investigation into the cause of the disaster was being conducted.

Meanwhile, the Assembly had expressed its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and wished the surviving victims a speedy recovery.
