The Minister for Inner-City and Zongo Development, Alhaji Boniface Abubakari Saddique has stated that the Zongo Development Fund (ZoDF) to be established is not for marriage, funeral and naming ceremonies.

“I want to emphasise that the ZoDF is not meant for parochial interest such as paying individual hospital bills for naming and marriage ceremonies,” he said.

Ahaji Saddique, therefore, cautioned that his ministry would not entertain anyone who would approach it for money for naming or marriage ceremonies.

The minister was speaking at the Regional Stakeholder Consultations workshop in the Tamale yesterday.

The workshop is to kick start the public sensitisation on the Inner-City Development Ministry’s activities. It is also aimed at soliciting views and inputs from the public on the bill to establish the Zongo Development Fund.

Alhaji Saddique said rather, the fund was to put up basic and necessary infrastructure for rapid business growth of the Zongo people in the country.

The minister stated that the Zongo fund if properly managed could help address the social vices and violent conflicts in the country, and therefore, called on the traditional authorities, private individuals and corporate entities to support the ministry to successfully implement it.

“In order to succeed, the ministry will require the support and partnership of all, including traditional authorities, private individuals, corporate entities, business people and international development agencies and missions,” he appealed.

Alhaji Saddique added that the ministry would be channelling much of its resources into health and education, and that it would progressively address social, economic and infrastructure deficits in the country.

The minister also emphasised that the ministry would work hard to promote socio-economic development of inner-cities and zongo communities in the country, and pointed out that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo was committed to improve the lives of the Zongo people and that nothing would prevent him from realising it.

Mr Salifu Saeed, Northern Regional Minister entreated all and sundry, especially those living in Zongo communities to embrace the opportunity to development themselves, expressing optimism that Zongo development fund would improve the poverty situation in the country.
