Youth parliament models to be formed in assemblies

Selected youth drawn from all the 15 Municipal and District Assemblies (MDAs) in the Upper East Region have formed a youth parliament model aimed at empowering the youth to participate actively in the decision making process of their respective communities.

It is under the auspices of the National Youth Authority (NYA) for Training of Trainers (TOT) programme for some selected youth, drawn from the region and expected to go and serve as advocacy platform in their respective communities to also train and form the models to inculcate development agenda, which are supposed to be inaugurated by the end of March this year.

Facilitating the training programme in Bolgatanga on Friday, the Director of Operations and Programmes of the NYA, Mumuni Sulemana, explained that the rationale for the training and the formation of the youth parliament models  across all the  MDAs in  the country was to empower the youth  to participate actively in the decision making process of the nation.

He attributed the spate of demonstrations often embarked upon by the youth as a result of not creating the political space for them to also participate in decision making process of the nation.

“After the training and formation of the models, duty bearers will be summoned by them to account for their stewardship, and also serve as an advocacy tool for the youth to champion developmental agenda in their respective areas.

“The youth parliament models that were piloted in the Upper West region in 2010 enabled the youth in the area to use the platforms to hold government functionaries accountable, resulting in completion of abandoned infrastructure some years back and making departmental heads living up to their responsibilities and task.

“They will also help build the capacity of the youth who intend becoming future parliamentarians, support the training cost of newly elected parliamentarians,  create opportunity for them  to be involved in running the affairs of the state and play significant role in the attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals.

“The models will be formed at the district, regional and national levels, as well as senior high schools, tertiary institutions and the president will address the National Youth Parliament dubbed “State of Youth Affairs” in the future where the youth will have the opportunity to quiz him,” Mr Sulemana assured.
