Work on the reconstruction of the old Gbewaa Palace in Yendi, the traditional capital of Dagbon traditional area began yesterday in preparation for the performance of the funerals of Ya-Na Mahamudu Abdulai and Ya-Na Yakubu Andani later in the month.

 

A bulldozer was seen pulling down the dilapidated structures and clearing land at the old palace in readiness for the real construction works.

 

The Northern Regional Minister Mr. Salifu Saeed in an interview with the Ghanaian Times yesterday said government handed over the work ahead of the performance of the two funerals of the late kings of Dagbon.

 

He stated that the work was to be completed in one week and that the supervisor has been instructed to work within the time limit.

 

Mr. Saeed added that the supervisor has been impressed upon not only to meet the deadline but to ensure quality of work.

 

Last month the three eminent committee under the leadership of Asantehene Otunfuo Osei Tutu presented a roadmap to the resolution to the Dagbon protracted crisis to the president, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

 

Leadership of both the Abudus and Andanis has penned their signatures on the roadmap before it was presented to the President at a ceremony at the Jubilee House.

 

The regional minister explained that the Northern Regional Security Council (REGSEC), would be monitoring the works closely from the start to end.

 

Mr. Saeed who is the chairman of the REGSEC indicated its resolve to assist to ensure the full implementation of the roadmap to the resolution of the Dagbon crisis.

 

He stressed that the government was very committed to support the eminent chiefs and families of both royal gates to bring closer to intractable conflicts to pave way for development of the area.

 

The minister added that everything needed to ensure successful and smooth implementation of the roadmap would be provided by the government.

 

“We are committed to the peace process and ready to provide the needed assistance to ensure success of the process.

 

The supervisor of the works, Mr.Yakubu Alhassan assured that he and his workers would work hard to complete the works on schedule.

 

The funeral of Ya-Na Mahamudu Abdulai is supposed to commence per the road map on December 14 and end on December 28 of this year, while that of the Ya-Na Yakubu Andani starts on January 4 and concludes on January 18, 2019.
