Women arrested for hoarding unwholesome food products

32-year-old women who allegedly scavenge for food and other products from refuse dumps to sell to the public has been arrested by the police.

Sadia Mohammed, 32, was arrested on Thursday morning at about 10:30 a.m. after police gathered intelligence about her activities.

She was found hoarding unwholesome food in her house at Zongo Laka in the Ashaiman Municipality, concealed in fertilizer sacks emitting bad stench and polluting the area , the Tema Regional Police Commander Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) George Tuffour disclosed this to the Ghanaian Times.

He mentioned some of the items found in the sacks as tomato paste of various brands, wheat, noddles, fruit juice, ice cream and cocoa powder.

Others are cosmetics products for hair and body products, diapers and several others.

Mr. Tuffour said Sadia claimed she got the items from the Kpone refuse damp during scavenging and brought them to select the good ones for sale.

He said officials from the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) had been invited to assist in the investigations, while the suspect is in police custody pending court action.

The arrest of the suspect has brought to fore the laxity in the disposal of unwholesome food and other products by manufacturing industries.
