Woman arrested for selling ‘Akpeteshie’ laced with ‘wee’

Suspect Mary KabaA 30-year-old woman, Mary Kaba, who allegedly mixed dried leaves, suspected to be Indian hemp, with local gin, for sale to the public, is in the custody of the Adabraka police in Accra.

The Adabraka District Police Commander Superintendent Kwesi Ofori told The Ghanaian Times in Accra yesterday that the complainants in the case are police officers.

He said on August 18, the police received information that Kaba was selling alcoholic drinks mixed with dried leaves suspected to be ‘wee’.

Supt. Ofori said the police proceeded to the drinking spot and arrested the suspect, who identified herself as a shop attendant.

The Police Commander said a search at the spot revealed 37 plastic containers, containing substances, and ‘apeteshie’, a local gin, suspected to have been mixed with Indian hemp.

He indicated that the suspect in her cautioned statement admitted the offence, and mentioned Baba as her accomplice, and efforts were being made to arrest Baba.

Supt. Ofori said the substance had been sent to the Ghana Standards Authority for examination while investigations into the case were ongoing.
