WhatsApp fraudster, hacker arrested

arrestA Phone repairer who allegedly hacked into the whatsApp account of a woman has been arrested by personnel of the Cyber Fraud Unit of the Criminal Investigation Department in Accra.

David Sam Essandoh was said to have hacked into his victim’s whatsApp and monitored her conversation through to his laptop.

The Director of the Unit, Dr Superintendent Gustav Yankson told the Ghanaian Times in Accra yesterday.

He said on August 10, a report was made to the Unit by the complainant (name withheld) that her whatsApp conversation was being monitored.

Supt. Yankson said based on that information her phone was examined and it was detected that her whatsApp has been connected through whatsApp web on the suspect’s laptop.

He said the suspect was arrested on August 15, based on intelligence.

The Director said investigations revealed that somewhere in July this year the victim had a problem with her phone and gave it to the suspect for repairs.

He said after the repairs, he connected the complainant’s whatsApp conversation through WhatsApp web to his computer without his victim’s authorisation.

The Director said the suspect would be processed for court soon.

He urged the public to be wary of such practice by cyber criminals to intercept media files and other documents to blackmail their victims.

“We advise the public especially ladies to be extremely cautious in giving out their mobile phones either for repairs, they can conduct regular check on their phones for any unusual signs and report to the Unit,” he said.
