Wenger steps up chase for Cech …after Szczesny errors

Soccer - Barclays Premier League - Fulham v Arsenal - Craven CottageARSENE WENGER is ready to step up his pursuit of Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech after another horror show from Wojciech Szczesny.

The Arsenal boss has finally lost faith in the Polish after his two blunders in the 2-0 defeat at top-four rivals Southampton on New Year’s Day – and will bid £7million for Stamford Bridge stopper Cech.

Cech, 32, lost his place at the start of this season to Thibaut Courtois, 22 – but is still keen to play first-team football.

Wenger axed Szczesny for yesterday’s FA Cup game against Hull at The Emirates, with Colombia keeper David Ospina, 26, preferred.

But Stamford Bridge boss Jose Mourinho is keen to retain the services of Cech, while Wenger has so far refused to confirm he will make a bid.

The Gunners boss now has real reservations about Szczesny and Cech’s agent, Viktor Kolar, said: “I think Arsenal should have made an offer to him.

A Schalke approach for City defender Matija Nastasic prompted the Premier League champions to sound out the German club about £25million-rated Draxler.

City boss Manuel Pellegrini would like first option on wide midfielder Draxler, 21, who has repeatedly been linked with Arsenal.

Draxler is understood to favour a move to the Premier League but has had an injury-hit season after being part of Germany’s World Cup-winning squad.

City will sell Nastasic but want £10m.

Schalke, managed by former Chelsea boss Roberto Di Matteo, are trying to reduce the fee to £8m but would prefer a loan first in this month’s transfer window, with a view to a summer deal.
